The College of Teacher Education (CTE) became a separate college in 1979 when the Nueva Vizcaya State University was still Nueva Vizcaya State Institute of Technology (NVSIT). Prior to its operation as a separate college, the Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education (BSAEd) was offered in 1973 that gave forth to the first graduates in 1977; and, the Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Extension (BSAExt) and Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education (BSIE) were offered in 1976. In 1985, the college commenced the Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education (BSEEd) which gave way to its new nomenclature, Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) in 1994. With education in demand, the CTE offered Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd) in 1999; Bachelor of Physical Education (BPE) in 2013; and Bachelor of Technical Teacher Education (BTTE) in 2015. Since its operation, CTE has been producing graduates who have shown exemplary performance in the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) with several students find top spots in the roster of regional performing examinees.
With the good performance in pre-service education and with its aspiration to enrich teaching skills of teachers the CTE absorbed from the former Graduate School six (6) graduate programs that were verticalized in 2014. The programs were as follows: Doctor of Philosophy in Science Education (Ph.D. Sci. Ed) specializing in General Science, Biological Science and Physical Science; Doctor of Philosophy in Multilingual Education (Ph. D-MLE); Doctor of Education in Educational Management (Ed. D. EM); Master of Arts in Education (MAED); Master of Education (MEd); and Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT).
The college is recognized by CHED as Delivering Higher Education Institution (DHEI) in the country for CHED and DOST scholarships.
Currently, the college is maintaining six (6) departments: the Graduate Program, Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Industrial/Technical Education, Physical Education, and the Senior High School with a total enrollment ranging from 1300 to 1400 per semester. With the collaboration of 51 committed core faculty members, 20 affiliate faculty from other colleges of the university and 5 visiting professors from UP Baguio the College of Teacher Education remains true to its oath of making learning a rewarding experience and preparing students to become active leaders, excellent scholars, and valuable professionals.
It is worthy to note that the College has produced six accredited full-fledged professors and an Inventor. Moreover, six undergraduate and graduate programs were accredited by the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP) ranging from Levels II, III, and IV. Furthermore, 100% of the undergraduate programs were issued Certificate of Program Compliance (COPC) by CHED Region 02. In 2018, the BEED program was rank 14th out 1457 as performing TEIs in the country by a national poll survey.
The college is housed in two two-storey buildings equipped with smart boards, televisions, laboratory rooms and shops such as woodworking, electronic, drafting, automotive, welding and fabrication and home economics. It also maintains two centers: the CHED accredited LET Review Center and the Dr. Salvador Blanza Fitness Center.
