CAS-Bay lab teachers, students receive training on laboratory safety
To equip students and faculty with essential safety knowledge and skills and maintain a safe laboratory environment for effective scientific inquiry, the Department of Natural Sciences under the College of Arts and Sciences of Nueva Vizcaya State University-Bayombong Campus conducted a Laboratory Safety Seminar on October 22, 2024 at Dumlao Farmers’ Training Center.
The seminar which covered three consecutive sessions designed to equip participants with essential safety knowledge and skills,.was attended by CAS laboratory-in-charge teachers and students with laboratory subjects.
Mr. Jean Andrada Sebbey, a senior medical technologist from the Nueva Vizcaya Provincial Hospital, gave an overview of laboratory safety and practical guidelines for maintaining a safe laboratory environment during the first session.
For Session 2, Mr. Carlo Aloyodan, a Safety Services instructor-volunteer, along with Mr. Rustico Jacinto Manuel, the president of the NVSU Red Cross Youth, delivered a lecture and demonstration on first aid basics and quick response techniques for emergencies in the laboratory.
The last session, which focused on the operation of fire extinguishers and prepared attendees to respond appropriately to fire emergencies, was led by Fire Officer (FO) 1 Reyma de Guzman and FO2 Lourdes Sabado from the Bureau of Fire Protection-Bayombong.
In her opening statement, Dr. Lori Shayne A. Busa, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and a professor handling laboratory class, reminded her colleagues and students of the practical importance of cultivating a culture of safety in laboratory settings while conducting experimental activities.
The seminar concluded with a closing remark from Ms. Edna V. Ramel, chairperson of the Natural Sciences Department, who expressed gratitude to all speakers and participants for their active engagement and commitment to safety.
