NVSU joins DOST-PTRI consortium for PH Silk Development

The Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU) joins as a new member of the consortium that formally entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) during the 4th SEDA Pilipinas Consortium, held as part of the 6th Philippine Silk Summit at the Centro de Turismo Intramuros, City of Manila, on October 23.

The consortium brings together DOST-PTRI and its network of partners from various higher education institutions (HEIs), research centers, and government agencies nationwide, collectively working toward the growth of the Philippine silk industry.

During the event, University President Dr. Wilfredo A. Dumale Jr. presented NVSU’s sericulture initiatives, highlighting the university’s ongoing efforts to support silk development.

He shared that NVSU has dedicated five hectares of land as a pilot silk plantation, with 2.5 hectares already planted and maintains partnerships with OISCA International as its international partner and DOST-PTRI as its local collaborator.

To strengthen community participation, NVSU continues to advance its sericulture efforts through active involvement of two local farmers in silk production, training of 25 others through OISCA, a recent seminar attended by 40 farmers, multiple tree-planting activities in collaboration with OISCA, and ongoing trial rearing activities on campus as part of its research and development initiatives.

The Philippine Silk Summit serves as a platform for enhancing cooperation among stakeholders toward a sustainable and sufficient Philippine silk industry, while advancing SEDA Pilipinas as an industry, movement, and brand that champions the excellence of Filipino silk.

Meanwhile, the SEDA Pilipinas Consortium provides a collaborative framework for capacity building among government and private sector stakeholders, unifying initiatives for a sustainable, responsible, and globally competitive silk industry in the country.

Through its inclusion in the consortium, NVSU reaffirms its commitment to advancing the Philippine silk industry by promoting sustainable practices, fostering livelihood opportunities, and preserving the nation’s rich agricultural and cultural heritage.
