NVSU Showcases Disaster Tech at ‘Handa Quirino’ Summit

Amid the Philippines' frequent encounters with typhoons and other natural disasters, Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU) participated in the ‘Handa Quirino’ Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Climate Change Action (DRRM CCA) Technologies Summit, hosted by the Provincial Government of Quirino at the Quirino Capitol Gymnasium on September 26, 2024.

The event served as a platform for sharing innovative technologies and practices to enhance disaster preparedness and response.

Representatives from the NVSU’s Sabatan Technopreneurship Hub showcased a range of cutting-edge solutions designed to mitigate the impacts of disasters.

Among the key technologies highlighted by NVSU was the UPads Project, a disaster preparedness initiative funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in collaboration with NVSU's College of Arts and Sciences which aims to provide efficient and sustainable solutions for disaster response.

Additionally, NVSU’s exhibit featured food technologies designed to prevent malnutrition during disasters, as well as several versatile metal technologies which are significant for both pre-disaster readiness and post-disaster management.

Among the NVSU’s key exhibits was the Mushroom Substrate Shredder from Bueno Farms, which serves a dual purpose by also functioning as a shredder for fallen tree branches, making it highly valuable for post-typhoon clean-ups.

Another highlight was the Fruit Pruning and Harvesting Device by Malachi Manufacturing, which allows for the rapid harvesting of fruit-bearing trees, offering a practical solution for farm workers in the wake of storms.

Further, Malachi Manufacturing's Manually Operated Seed Sowing Device was designed to expedite agricultural recovery after disasters by enabling quick sowing of seeds in affected areas.

Keynote speakers at the event included Hon. Dakila Carlo E. Cua, Governor of Quirino Province; Hon. Midy N. Cua, Congresswoman of Quirino; DOST Secretary Renato I. Solidum Jr.; and NL-PAGASA Regional Director Socrates F. Paat, Jr. Their speeches emphasized the importance of integrating science and technology in disaster risk reduction and management, particularly in the face of increasing climate change-related challenges.

Representing NVSU at the summit were Cherrie Prelle D. Pascual, SINAG Co-Project Leader and CBE Faculty member; Joshua B. Español, Business and Promotion Adviser; and Patrick Arvy G. Ormillo, Project Administrative Aide III. Their participation was part of the event’s technology exhibit, where NVSU displayed a variety of DRRM-related innovations.
