Bridging Futures: NVSU’s Curriculum Overhaul Targets Industry Relevance, Job Readiness

BAMBANG, NUEVA VIZCAYA — Illustrating Nueva Vizcaya State University’s commitment to aligning its educational offerings with the evolving demands of the job market, the College of Industrial Technology spearheaded the Curriculum Review Stakeholders Consultation at the NVSU Training Center on May 21, 2024.

Incepted in August of the previous year under the leadership of Dr. Vilma Santos and Campus ICD Coordinator Rodney Cajimat, the forum, in hybrid format, attracted 120 stakeholders, including government and non-government partners, student leaders, retirees, parents, students, and industry experts.

With the aim to ensure that all programs meet modern industrial standards and job market requirements, the consultation comprehensively reviewed courses within the College of Industrial Technology and the IT department. Programs scrutinized included the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, Bachelor’s in Industrial Technology with majors in Mechanical Technology, Electronics Technology, Drafting Technology, Computer Technology, Electrical Technology, Automotive Technology, Welding and Fabrication Technology, HVAC Technology, Garments Technology, Cosmetology, Food Technology, and the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management.

Dr. Jane Navalta, NVSU’s Director of Instruction and Curriculum Development, stressed the importance of tackling the root causes of graduate unemployment and adapting the curriculum accordingly.

"Identifying how targeted curriculum adjustments can reduce employment gaps is crucial for ensuring our educational services remain relevant and effective," Dr. Navalta noted, acknowledging NVSU's history of producing industry leaders while emphasizing the need for continual updates and enhancements.

A key aspect of the review involved the reprofiling and upskilling of faculty through collaborations with industry and government agencies such as TESDA, DTI, and DICT.

It was noted that insights from these collaborations, particularly in emerging technologies like blockchain, data analytics, AI, and data privacy, have been vital in crafting a dynamic educational framework.

Moreover, the event also underscored that partnerships like these, not only enhance the curriculum content but also refine teaching methodologies, ensuring faculty are well-prepared to guide students toward successful industry integration.

The CIT showcased its method of integrating direct feedback from industry partners into the curriculum, fostering a teaching environment that is

both practical and aligned with real-world applications. The emphasis on embedding certifications such as NC2 early in the curriculum further prepares students for immediate entry into the workforce with recognized qualifications.

Additionally, the consultation underscored the importance of strengthening entrepreneurial potentials by creating socially responsive research opportunities and encouraging participation in start-up pitching competitions.

This initiative is designed to foster a spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship among students, equipping them with the skills needed to launch successful businesses and make impactful societal contributions.

This curriculum review marks a significant advancement in NVSU’s mission to enhance educational quality and foster innovation and community engagement.
