NVSU explores urban farming innov at Neighbor's Farm in Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan – August 21, 2024 – Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU), led by President Dr. Wilfredo A. Dumale, Jr., visited Neighbor's Farm in Tokyo to explore advanced agricultural and environmental practices, with the visit facilitated by Dr. Dumale’s co-alumnus, Dr. Masaru Mizoguchi, a professor at the University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Neighbor's Farm, located in central Tokyo, is an exemplary urban farm known for its cutting-edge agricultural techniques. Operated by Katsura Umemura, a 2014 graduate of the University of Tokyo's Faculty of Agriculture, the farm was established in 2019 in Hino City. Umemura's career began with large-scale tomato cultivation in Fukui Prefecture, but her passion for urban agriculture led her to establish Neighbor's Farm. The name "Neighbor's Farm" reflects its mission to foster a close connection between fields and the dining table, even in a bustling city like Tokyo. The farm aims to deliver fresh, high-quality vegetables, allowing city dwellers to enjoy produce that feels like it was picked by their neighbor.

In the face of shrinking farmland and challenging urban conditions, Neighbor's Farm has pioneered the concept of renting "productive green space." This innovative approach has garnered substantial support and aims to create a sustainable model of agriculture that connects producers and consumers in Tokyo. The farm is committed to preserving farmland for future generations and contributing to the development of a vibrant, sustainable urban community.

During the visit, Katsura Umemura provided a comprehensive overview of the farm’s techniques, highlighting the benefits of urban agriculture in enhancing food security, reducing carbon footprints, and promoting sustainable living. She also addressed the challenges of urban farming, including space constraints and the need for continuous technological innovation.

The NVSU delegation, including Vice President for Administration and Finance Dr. Cristina R. Salvosa, Director of the Center for Research, Resource, and Development Center (CRRDC) Dr. Elbert A. Sana, Director of Research and Development (R&D) Dr. Jessie Pascual P. Bitog, and Director of International Affairs Atty. Regine Karla G. Tabas, toured the farm's facilities. They observed urban farming practices such as LED lighting for optimized plant growth, automated watering systems, and eco-friendly pest control methods.

The visit is part of NVSU’s broader effort to strengthen international partnerships and integrate global best practices into its academic and research initiatives. As urbanization rises, exploring innovative agricultural solutions is vital for ensuring food security and promoting sustainable development in both urban and rural communities.
