NVSU, Mie University partner for workshop on Crop Fungal Disease Diagnosis
Nueva Vizcaya State University’s (NVSU) College of Agriculture (CAg) and Mie University (MU) conducted a workshop titled “Field Diagnosis, Isolation, and Preliminary Identification of Phytopathogenic Fungi” at the Crop Protection Laboratory, December 12, 2024.
The session was led by Prof. Dr. Chiharu Nakashima from the Plant Pathology Laboratory of Mie University, Japan, and attended by NVSU students, faculty, and researchers specializing in plant pathology and crop protection.
Prof. Dr. Nakashima emphasized the importance of early detection and timely interventions to mitigate crop losses and improve yield.
The workshop aimed to address critical challenges in managing fungal diseases that significantly affect crop productivity, particularly citrus and banana crops.
Participants were trained in early field diagnosis, proper sample collection, and essential laboratory techniques for isolating and identifying phytopathogenic fungi.
Through hands-on activities, participants learned tissue isolation methods and preliminary fungal identification processes, equipping them to distinguish between pathogenic and non-pathogenic fungi.
