Beneath the Sampaloc Tree: Floribel’s Story of Resilience and Triumph

Resilient. Nurturing. Inspirational

These qualities are not just attributes but lived experiences that have shaped an exceptional student of the Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU) whose academic journey blossomed under the thick leaves of a Sampaloc tree in Barangay Abuyo, Alfonso Castaṅeda, Nueva Vizcaya.

For Floribel T. Velasco, the Sampaloc tree became more than just a place to seek shelter during online classes; it symbolized her resilience in the face of adversity. Growing up in a poor family, Floribel faced challenges that would have discouraged many others.

The Sampaloc tree, with its big branches and leaves, represents care and support. Just like the tree, Floribel's family, teachers, and friends have always been there for her, supporting her dreams and helping her become who she is today.

Her father is a hardworking farmer while her mother, once a farmer herself, looked for work in Tuguegarao to support their family of five. Floribel, the second child of three sisters, learned early the value of hard work and perseverance, taking on responsibilities beyond her years, helping her father in the fields and caring for her siblings when her mother was away.

Floribel was also inspired by a teacher from Dupax who had a big impact on her. This teacher's excellence inspired Floribel to become a teacher herself, with dreams of returning to her old school one day.

Just as the Sampaloc tree, she has shown strength and determination to succeed despite challenging circumstances, specifically during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Walang signal sa lugar namin so kailangan naming magbiyahe. Either maglalakad ka or makikisakay ka. Ang gamit po doon ay motorcycle. Sa dalawang taon na ganoon, hindi ko po makakaila na nahirapan ako kasi ang layo. Ilang hours ang lalakarin mo. Nasa ilalim lang po kami puno ng Sampaloc. Pinakaproblema po namin kapag umuulan, nakapayong kami habang may online class. Hindi ko po makakalimutan yung final exam, nagsasagot kami habang umuulan,”she recalled.

Floribel's academic excellence extended beyond the classroom. She was actively involved in extra-curricular activities, serving as Vice President of Prime Education for English teachers and students in her first year; Student Council Secretary for the College of Teacher Education in her second and third years; and student adviser for Prime Education in her fourth year. She managed her time effectively, seeking guidance through devotion and prayer every morning.

As Floribel gets ready for the next part of her life, from attending review sessions, taking the Licensure Exam for Teachers, pursuing a masters degree and landing a job, she remembers the lessons from the Sampaloc tree: being strong, valuing education, and having supportive people around her, including the university’s role in her academic journey.

“Nais kong magpasalamat sa Nueva Vizcaya State University dahil tinanggap niya ako at inalagaan, tinuruan sa institusyon na ito. Ang maipapangako ko po sa aking paglabas mula dito sa NVSU pansamantala, gagawin ko po ang best ko palagi para maging proud ang aking alma mater sa akin,” she said with heartfelt gratitude.

Floribel's story inspires us all, showing that with determination and support, we can overcome any challenge and achieve great things much like the strong and tall Sampaloc tree.
