NVSU employees take a wellness break, compete in Filipino games
Highlighting the importance of well-being through traditional Filipino games, Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU) teaching and non-teaching employees came together for the second Holistic Approach Towards Achieving Wellness (HATAW) event on February 5, 2025 near the old administration building on the Bayombong Campus.
The game featured this time was a modified version of dodgeball, locally known as batuhan ng bola, in which two teams competed. One team threw a ball made from woven coconut leaves, while the other team tried to avoid getting hit. Players who were hit by the ball were eliminated from the game. The event ended when all members of a team were out. If both teams lost all their players, the team eliminated in the shorter time was declared the loser.
This was made possible by the carefully planned, shortened periods on Wednesdays, where the games are scheduled to provide employees with wellness breaks from their regular tasks.
For the elimination rounds, the following teams competed and emerged victorious:
- Round 1: CBE vs CFERM – Winner: CFERM
- Round 2: CAS vs CVM – Winner: CAS
- Quarter Finals 1: CE vs CA – Winner: CA
- Quarter Finals 2: CHE vs Non-Teaching Personnel 2 – Winner: NTP2
- Quarter Finals 3: CTE vs CFERM – Winner: CTE
- Quarter Finals 4: NTP1 vs CAS – Winner: CAS
As the competition moves to the semi-finals, the following matchups are set:
- Semi-Final 1: CA vs CTE
- Semi-Final 2: NTP2 vs CAS
The HATAW initiative is anchored on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 on Good Health and Well-being and SDG 4 on Quality Education. It aims to promote health and wellness while nurturing a sense of community within the university.
The initiative is supported by NVSU President and is designed to offer interactive activities that allow employees to take mental-health breaks from their daily routines.
The event was coordinated by Culture and the Arts Campus Coordinator Joseph Bubod, with the assistance of Bachelor of Physical Education (BPED) students, who applied their academic knowledge to facilitate the games. Launched by the NVSU Culture and the Arts Office under the guidance of Director Fermila D. Cauilan, the event was carried out in partnership with the Salun-at Project.
Last month, the HATAW program also featured the modified Laro ng Lahi Relay, showcasing a series of Indigenous and creative Filipino games such as Tumbang Preso, Sipa, Kadang-Kadang, Siatong, and the Sack Race. These traditional games were played by teams to encourage both teamwork and healthy competition among NVSU employees.
