NVSU empowers educators to support students’ mental wellbeing ahead of new academic year
As the new academic year approaches, Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU) has assured that its educators are prepared not only to teach but also to care for the emotional and mental wellbeing of their students.
Spearheaded by the Student Affairs and Services–Guidance Unit, university teachers gathered for a seminar-workshop titled “Mental Health Matters: Equipping Educators to Support Students' Wellbeing” with the theme “Teaching Minds, Reaching Hearts: A Wellness Approach to Education” held at the University Library on August 6.
The program aimed to equip educators with knowledge and skills to help and support students—particularly those going through personal challenges, academic stress, or other issues affecting mental health.
Topics discussed included identifying signs of mental health concerns, practicing empathetic listening, creating a safe and supportive classroom environment, and providing psychological first aid during crises. Participants also engaged in activities and role-playing exercises to apply what they learned.
The Guidance Unit likewise underscored the importance of teachers taking care of their own mental health, emphasizing that they need to be in a healthy and stable state to effectively guide their students.
Through initiatives like this, NVSU reaffirms its commitment to delivering holistic education—one that nurtures not only students’ intellect but also their emotional wellbeing and overall welfare.
